These ideas are not mutually exclusive, and if you answered YES to any of these questions, you are not alone.
I created Champagne and Mudboots for women who have a shared interest in homesteading and the sparkly. Whether that be their fashion sense, their design tastes, or just the sparkle of city lights not too far off. I also envisioned it as a platform to help other mothers in this crazy season of life as we balance kids, work, and other pursuits. Because let’s face it, sometimes the sparkle we are looking for is just the feeling of a happy household.
Welcome- It’s Nice to Meet You!
I’m Dr. Kelley Dees-Atkinson, a woman wearing many different hats, literally and figuratively. A wife, mama, veterinarian, homesteader, homeschool teacher, blogger, Pinterest addict, lover of hats, shoes, glitter and throwing parties!
After moving to a four acre property on the rural/suburban fringe of North Texas in 2015, I found myself lacking a particular group to identify with as I researched for ideas for our new homestead.
Many sites cater to a more ‘rugged’ or ‘natural’ group, and while I love nature, I was left feeling a little conflicted about how to incorporate my high heel loving self into this homesteading journey. Surely, glitter can be used on a homestead!
I also found that myself and many of my friends with kids were finding it challenging to meet the demands of work and family. Desiring to create the life they imagined, but finding it hard to juggle the responsibilities. How do you create a life worth toasting, especially a life different than the mainstream?
This website is my answer to that void. A place were hard work and sweet celebrations meet.
I wanted to create a community for those of us who are a littler girlier than your average homesteader, but who still aren’t afraid to get dirty and put in the hard work. Getting dirty doesn’t bother me. I did go to vet school, and have had my hand up the downside of a cow before.
Like, more than once. I just prefer to do it while wearing pink boots.
I lovingly referred to some faux diamond studs I have as ‘palpation diamonds’, as you could lose one in a pasture palpating cattle, and you wouldn’t cry too much about it since they aren’t real.
Since graduating, though, I’ve been in small animal work and especially love feline medicine. I knew my oldest human kid was a boy after his mama’s heart, when he wrote ‘I love cats’ on the litter box in his room. Granted, I probably should have asked where he got the black marker from now that I think about it, but at the time, I thought it was so sweet.
We also homeschool our 3 children- an endeavor which keeps us very busy since I still work part-time as a veterinarian. Can you tell I like to live a little outside the box? Fight the status quo, be you, and all that jazz.
It is my intention with this blog to help provide insight into balancing it all (because let’s face it, that can be really hard), and inspire you to create the life you’ve always imagined, even if that picture doesn’t always fit the common mould.
So grab your champagne glass and your mudboots, and let’s get to work on a homestead worth toasting!
